Pressed into Memory

June 5 - August 28, 2026

Opie Gallery

This collection of work brings together images that celebrate big vistas and small details of life. Through the act of gathering images – flora, fauna, ordinary objects, and abstract motifs – it embodies the way we preserve memories through objects.  Each print becomes a memento, a fragment of experience carefully shaped, inked and pressed into permanence. Relief printmaking, with its repeatable impressions and layered possibilities, feels like an especially rich way to capture these ideas.

At the heart of this exhibition is the universal experience of curating what we hold dear, and the human desire to preserve life’s moments – through both imagery and craft.

Artist Statement:

All my life, I’ve been collecting images to preserve experiences and feelings, and to feel them anew. From an early age, I have created scrapbooks and sketchbooks full of memories and responses to the world around me. There has always been a camera in my hands or nearby.

Embarking on my own art practice has been a way to revisit these memories and places and to highlight them or to knit them together in a new way. One metaphor I like is a charcuterie board – where I gather up the “good stuff” and serve it up in an artful way. While my images may be personal, I hope there is also a bit of the universal in what I offer and a confirmation that there is “good stuff” to be found all around us.

The craft of printmaking in multiple layers and colors provides an opportunity to study images and determine how to make them come to life in a way I find fascinating and rewarding. Details emerge and recede in the carving process; colors play off each other in surprising ways as layers are inked and transposed. There is always more to learn as I study the rich traditions of Japanese printmaking or the innovations of modern practitioners. I’m also informed by comparing notes and collaborating with fellow printmakers and (of course) the trials and triumphs of my own studio practice.
