As Grass Grows: Ten Years at Prairieside Outpost is a group exhibition commemorating the  first ten years of the Artist-in-Residence program at Prairieside Outpost in Matfield Green,  Kansas. The exhibition features 28 visual artists and writers from across North America,  each of whom has worked on their creative endeavors in the remote and head-clearing  expanse that is the Kansas Flint Hills. This unique ecosystem, known for its unmediated  landscape of rolling hills, layered limestone, and the biodiverse habitat of the tallgrass  prairie, provides an engaging natural setting for creativity.

A significant aspect that defines the Artist-in-Residence Program at Prairieside Outpost is  its ability to accommodate the artists, their collaborators, and their families. A core  concept of the program is the idea of shared creativity as a natural state of being. Freed  from regular obligations and habits within the Prairieside Outpost Artist-in-Residence  program, the open horizon of possibilities has found diverse ways to take root in each  artist's efforts. As Grass Grows: Ten Years at Prairieside Outpost celebrates how time and  the natural environment have meaningfully supported and impacted the creative work of  this outstanding community of artists.

The exhibition, curated by Prairieside Outpost Program Directors Laura Berman and Chris Akers, is accompanied by “As Grass Grows”, a full catalog documenting the exhibiting artists’ work and thoughts about creating work at Prairieside Outpost. Contributing essayists in the exhibition catalog include S. Portico Bowman and Sally Paul, with art direction and design by Melissa Dehner at HoneyBee Creative. The exhibition and printed catalog for “As Grass Grows: Ten Years at Prairieside Outpost” were created with support from the Kansas City Art Institute, The Kemper Family Foundation, and Prairieside Cottage + Outpost.
