Feather as a Machine

Kinetic Art at the Machine-Nature Interface

Mike Miller

September 6 - October 26, 2019

Main Gallery

Everything is a machine.

In this series of sculptures, I'm working with the idea that everything is a machine, and that there are two main types, human-made, and nature-made machines. For instance, trees are natural machines that absorb carbon dioxide and create oxygen, and human-made machines such as the printing press, birth control pill, smartphones, etc. ave initiated nearly all changes in human culture throughout history. The interface between these two types of machines is the environment that has shaped human culture and art

Tom Gomersall: The Redacted Version

August 2 - September 28, 2019

Front Gallery

His subject matter encompasses right angles, cubes, triangles, and circles; tunnels, curves, figures, and smoke. He can painstakingly create a pluperfect painting of knives, and also abstract fields of dissolving color. Tom Gomersall’s art demands equal time from both the right and left side of his brain, and the viewer’s. The consummate aesthetic juggler, Gomersall creates scenes of visionary architecture that are as meticulously drawn as his organic, atmospheric works appear siphoned from a rainbow following a cloudburst.

If Gomersall’s architectonic drawings and paintings appeal to reason and stability, his works on paper of tube-shaped formations, twisted and wrapped around one another, suggest convoluted entrails sucked from a creature out of Dune. Geometric field patterns proffer an environment of total cohesion, while shadowy passageways disappear into nameless voids. His color ranges from riotous primaries to pastels to pitch blackness. After more than sixty years of making art, Gomersall states: “I have no use for consistency. So I’m never concerned about the development of a style in a conventional sense. I’m working out certain mental and visual problems in an almost quasi-scientific way. Things get activated by my brain and my emotions and I just try to ride it.”

CHARLIE PAYNTER

10 Years and Counting

August 2 - October 26, 2019

Opie Gallery

I retired in 2008 after working over 50 years at the Kansas City Star and I began making sculptures from my vast (over 6000) collection of bottle openers. In the past, I had shows of three-dimensional sculptures made of bottle openers and two-dimensional wall pieces from bottle openers, wire, and found and recycled objects that I got from friends and found at thrift stores. These wall pieces had evolved a long way from the little bottle opener characters I started with.

I like to challenge myself to see if I can do something new and different. I still use found and recycled objects in my work. And I use lots of wire, glue, and spray paint. An art critic said that "I use the wire to draw with."  I hadn't thought of it that way, but I think it is true.

I hope people enjoy it.  After ten years I am still totally enjoying my life as an artist.

DUNCAN BURNETT

Umbrella Scissor Dissection

August 2 - September 28, 2019

Back Gallery

Duncan started his art experience as an autodidact in the photography world as a teenager in the 1970's, and though he was always drawn to collage, he only began his early experiments in the late nineties. He works strictly in cut and paste collage, no digital or printing, making each piece a one of a kind original. He had his first solo show in 2009, and has had several since and also a few group shows.

For over 30 years, the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center has existed as a creative and visual arts venue for regional, national and international artists. We plan to continue this role within the Kansas City art community as we move forward, but have added preservation services of artists and their work to our mission.

We have formed The Leedy Foundation, a non-profit 501c3. It is the wish of Jim Leedy to continue this tradition of creative innovation and artistic opportunity while servicing the need to preserve and promote artistic legacy and heritage.
