"Sacred Monsters" features seventeen paintings (oil on wood 32"x48") that incorporate a variety of classic themes and compositions. Included in the show are Lawrence’s renditions of the crucifixion, the three graces, and Diana hunting.
Turning his back on the "super-high-graphic-ironic-pseudo-iconic-cold-punch-line" themed art that plagues so many of his generation, Lawrence strives for an amber-tinted throwback to the 1940’s New York art movements.
Known primarily
for his recent film and video work, this will be Lawrence’s
first solo exhibition of paintings in a Kansas City gallery. The
artist will be in attendance for the “First Fridays”
opening reception (09.02.05).
